Add EMI's 40th-anniversary edition of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" to the short list of albums significantly enhanced by a bonus disc. New mixes, stereo versions, radio broadcasts and demos combine to limn Bowie's early work with producer Tony Visconti--an alternate version of "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud" with just Bowie on voice and guitar and Paul Buckmaster on cello, and a nine-and-a-half minute version of "Memory of a Free Festival" being the highlights. Impeccable sound and sparkling renditions of "Life on Mars?," "China Girl" and "Word on a Wing" make "VH1 Storytellers" a worthwhile addition to any Bowie collection. It's the stories--the vivid reminiscences, vocal imitations, humor and poignancy--that elevate the album to more than a standard TV-concert soundtrack. Impeccable sound and sparkling renditions of "Life on Mars?," "China Girl" and "Word on a Wing" make "VH1 Storytellers" a worthwhile addition to any Bowie collection. The Stooges played their first gig at house party on Halloween in 1967, but the group and its leader, Iggy Pop, were soon performing in venues alongside groundbreaking acts like the MC5. Thanks in part to the wild, unpredictable live performances by Pop, a scout named Danny Fields from Electra Records took notice and The Stooges were signed to the label shortly thereafter. The group eventually caught the ear of David Bowie, who famously took Iggy Pop under his wing.
