April 8, 2011 - The Smithereens emerged from the tangled jungles of New Jersey to mild FM radio stardom some 25 years ago, a smoldering power-pop unit with a knack for brooding melodies and tantalizingly retro arrangements. The band thrived on college radio playlists for several years before succumbing to a lack of inspiration and declining interest in beatnik wannabes. Following a string of mostly samey albums and a continued regression to the mean, the band disappeared into a gopher hole more than a decade ago.

July 21, 2000 - Smithereens frontman Pat DiNizio has announced plans to run for a position in the U.S. Senate for the state of New Jersey. DiNizio will run as a candidate for the Reform Party, according to a press release.
February 17, 2000 - The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, N.J., which has been shuttered since 1998, may open its doors again by Memorial Day, according to the Asbury Park Press. The club gained fame in the mid-1970s as a favorite hangout and jamming spot of Bruce Springsteen, and its legend grew as acts like Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, The Smithereens, and Bon Jovi built followings there.
October 13, 1999 - The Smithereens -- largely silent during the latter half of the 1990s -- will take their Rickenbacker-fueled sound to the road in support of their first album since 1994, "God Save The Smithereens" (Koch/Velvel), set for release on Oct. 19.
