September 25, 2009 - For New Orleans native and Grammy Award winner Branford Marsalis, becoming a jazz musician was almost a foregone conclusion. Alongside siblings Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason, his musical education began early by way of his pianist/teacher father Ellis Marsalis Jr., and was fine-tuned later at the Berklee College of Music.
August 29, 2008 - An expansive Miles Davis box set that includes a newly produced documentary DVD is being released to mark the 50th anniversary of his album "Kind of Blue." The two-CD/DVD set also includes 12-inch LP pressed on 180-gram blue vinyl, a fold-out poster, an envelope of memorabilia and a 60-page book of critical essays, annotations and photography, according to a press release.
September 23, 2003 - Sting, as part of the marketing campaign behind the new Blue Cash card from American Express, will play a free concert in Chicago's Grant Park on Oct. 7.
August 29, 2001 - Jazz guitarist Mike Stern will release "Voices," his tenth solo album for Atlantic Jazz, in September. Unlike the searing Hendrix-to-Metheny sensibilities of the Grammy-nominated guitarist's past efforts, "Voices" delves into more piquant African and Middle-Eastern worldly flavors.
March 7, 2001 - Legendary guitarist John Scofield, known for his stylistic 180s, is pulling another one with his current tour behind the recently released album "Works for Me" (Verve). Fresh off the rock-funk blends of "Bump" and "A Go Go"--the latter album with Medeski Martin and Wood--Scofield went to straight-ahead jazz for "Works," thanks to a chance meeting with another legend--drummer Billy Higgins.
