SXSW Performer: Black Mountain (Vancouver, British Columbia)

The members of Vancouver's Black Mountain are graduate students at the School of Classic Rock. The band's self-titled 2005 debut displays an easy-to-spot palette of influences, ranging from Black Sabbath to Blue Cheer, but what makes frontman Stephen McBean and company special is the way the band--replete with howling, distantly spooky vocals and a thick, rather gnomish sense of mournful darkness--creates something wholly new and unexpected out of what is essentially a thoroughly played out genre. The group recently dropped its follow-up full-length, "In the Future."

Album Review: Black Mountain, "Black Mountain" (Jagjaguwar)

Black Mountain seems out of place with everything else going on in 2005. The band's excellent, self-titled debut sounds nothing like such new wave New Wavers as Franz Ferdinand, Hot Hot Heat, The Bravery or, really, just about any other new act these days.
