Interview: Matt Thiessen of Relient K

The last 12 months have been "weird," says Relient K's Matt Thiessen. It was a year during which he saw a song he produced--Owl City's "Fireflies"--edge its way up the charts, watched Relient K's album "Forget and Not Slow Down" debuted at No. 15 on The Billboard 200 chart, and found himself collaborating with former girlfriend Katy Perry and English singer/songwriter Natasha Bedingfield.

The 2008 edition of the long-running Vans Warped Tour is finally winding down. The festival sets up shop tomorrow (8/8) at the Boise area's Idaho Center Amphitheatre, with stops to follow in Washington, Oregon and California. Fans will enjoy the usual heavy hitting punk and alt-rock fare, as well as Halfpipe Skate Ramp action. The tour's lineup has varied from location to location, but has included acts such as All That Remains, All Time Low, Charlotte Sometimes, Classic Crime, Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes, Horrorpops, Motion City Soundtrack, Norma Jean, Relient K, Rise Against, Say Anything, TAT, Against Me! and The Bronx. The award for most surprising act on the roster goes to Matisyahu, who played 3 dates in early July--though we shouldn't be surprised at all, since he's pretty much cornered the market on breaking stereotype. SoundSpike writer/photographer John Voket attended Warped's July 28 stop in Englishtown, NJ, to write about the event and take some photos of the action.
