SXSW Performer: Earlimart (Los Angeles, CA)

Indie-rock duo Earlimart, named for a tiny, central California cowtown, has mastered the art of mellow rock with one part easygoing melody, two parts skilled musicianship and the occasional contribution from friends. Made up of bassist/keyboardist Ariana Murray and guitarist, singer and The Ship studio founder Aaron Espinoza, the group has an established discography, dating back to 1999's "Filthy Doorways" and stretching to the pair's most recent release, 2008's "Hymn and Her." The two just wrapped their first tour of Japan and will return to Austin as veteran SXSW artists.

Blogging SXSW: Earlimart at Buffalo Billiards

With the official start of the weekend Friday (3/14) came many more music fans pounding the pavement at SXSW, taking advantage of all the showcase options.

SXSW Performer: Earlimart (Los Angeles, CA)

Earlimart frontman Aaron Espinosa hails from Fresno, CA; the little farm town that gave the band its name sits about halfway between Espinosa's hometown and his adopted Los Angeles. The positioning of one thing on the way to another thing--in the purest, hopeful sense--reflects the kind of music Earlimart creates: dense narrative structures set in front of lush, yearning music, miniature storytelling imbued with a sense of mystery and adventure by Espinosa's earnest, yet deadpan, vocals. The band released its fifth and latest studio set, "Mentor Tormentor," last fall.

SXSW Performance: Earlimart

Earlimart--which takes is name from a small farming town south of frontman Aaron Espinoza's native Fresno, CA--is the rare band that's still evolving and improving after four albums and a half-decade as a recording act.

Earlimart (Los Angeles, CA)

Earlimart, the place, is a small aggie town somewhere in California's Central Valley between the nowhere of Bakersfield and the somewhat larger nowhere of Fresno. It exists mainly to supply and house farmers and farm equipment, and as far as anyone can tell, nothing remarkable has really ever happened in Earlimart. Earlimart, the band, is mostly some guys who escaped from the Valley and made their way to the greater somewhere of Los Angeles. They sound, then, nothing like you would expect them to. With dense, lush soundscapes, swooning vocal takes, haunting piano refrains, Earlimart seems like nothing so much as a less difficult, more American version of Radiohead. Somebody should probably keep an eye on the Central Valley from now on. Their new album, "Treble and Tremble," is available now. --Tjames Madison
