Album Review: Idlewild, "Warnings/Promises" (Capitol)

Idlewild (Edinburgh, UK)

Years ago the Bay City Rollers and Rod Stewart drove an entire generation of potential Scottish rockers underground, afraid to show their faces for fear of potential retaliation-by-assumed-company. Now Edinburgh's Idlewild have arrived to dispense with old preconceptions. Musically comprising a balance somewhere between countrymen Aztec Camera and early Soul Asylum, Idlewild deliver the requisite modern goods: smooth, melodic hooks and yearning, ambiguous lyrics, with a hard, pop sheen firmly rooted in the here and now. Their fourth album, "Warning/Promises," is due March 7. --Tjames Madison

Performing Saturday, March 19 at midnight at La Zona Rosa (612 W. 4th St.).
